This past Saturday at GLORY 15 in Istanbul, Turkey was definitely a night to remember for kickboxing fans around the world. Gokhan Saki became the GLORY Light Heavyweight Champion after defeating Nathan Corbett in the semi-finals and Tyrone Spong in the Finals.
Spong, who had defeated Saulo Cavalari earlier in the night, suffered a shattered shin bone half way through round one when Saki checked a low kick. The injury is very reminiscent of Anderson Silva's horrific leg break during UFC 168 not long ago in his match against Chris Weidman. When the break occured, the match was immediately stopped. Saki crouched down next to Spong unil his corner came in to check on him.
Spong was rushed to a hospital and has already undergone surgery, which is reported to have been completely successful. As for Saki, he is very pleased with his win saying:
“I don't need to prove myself anymore. Everybody wants to beat me now, so let's start again”. See full video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQv3_KLJH04#t=70
