Best known to fans as “The Ultimate Warrior” during his initial run in the World Wrestling Federation (now called WWE) from 1987 until 1992, Jim Hellwig, who in 1993 legally changed his name to just “Warrior”, died unexpectedly yesterday just days after being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

After years of being at odds with Vince McMahon and his former employer, World Wrestling Entertainment, Warrior was inducted into the Hall of Fame this past Saturday in New Orleans, Louisiana. He also made a brief appearance at WrestleMania 30 before the crowd of over 75,000 fans. One day later he appeared on the “Monday Night Raw” television show saying the following:

“Every man’s heart one day beats its final beat. His lungs breathe a final breath. And if what that man did in his life makes the blood pulse through the body of others and makes them bleed deeper and something larger than life then his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized. By the story tellers, by the loyalty, by the memory of those who honor him and make the running the man did live forever.”

According to TMZ, Warrior collapsed at a hotel in Arizona yesterday and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Warrior is best remembered for his brightly colored face paint, high-energy ring entrance and high profile matches in his short career including two reigns as WWF Intercontinental Champion and one reign as WWF World Champion.
